JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University is seeking two Postdoctoral Scholars for the REID Lab under the direction of Dr. Tahira Reid Smith. The following broad areas of focus are of interest to the REID Lab:
Area 1: Design Science and Engineering Design
Area 2: Engineering Education
Area 3: Cyber-Physical Human Systems
Through these focus areas, the lab is seeking to make impacts that address challenges in extreme design, foster a culture of invention in K-12 and undergraduate students, explore human-machine collaboration with a special interest in women’s health and FemTech, and address issues related to equity, inclusion, accessibility, and justice.
Job Duties:
Conduct research that supports one or more of the three focus areas listed and/or areas of impact described.
Co-author scholarly articles for journals and conferences and explore other avenues to sharing findings with the public.
Contribute to developing and writing grant proposals.
Mentor and help supervise the graduate and undergraduate student members of the REID Lab. This may include providing feedback on projects, manuscripts, and presentations.
Assist in facilitating lab meetings and managing the lab.
Qualifications & Requirements:
Must have a Ph.D. by the start date and must have conducted research in a discipline relevant to any of the three areas described.
Must have excellent written and oral communication skills and have a passion for fostering a culture of writing in the lab.
Must have experience with human-subject studies including preparing Institute Review Board applications, designing experiments and research studies, conducting qualitative data collection methods, and identifying and implementing appropriate analysis methods.
Must be an excellent team player and collaborator.
Experience in any of the following is a huge plus: hypothesis testing followed along with appropriate statistical analysis methods, machine learning, programming, control theory, and engagement with artificial intelligence.

They should also discuss their personal and professional goals and how joining the REID Lab would add value to those goals. Candidates should also include a standard CV that highlights their experience and provide the names, affiliations, and contacts of three references. This is a term appointment, funded for one year from date of hire, with a possibility of renewal dependent on funding.
