Job Description Summary:

NIH-funded postdoctoral position is available to investigate molecular mechanisms controlling hemochorial placentation using human and rat stem cells and genetically manipulated rat models (see: PNAS 118:e2016517118, 2021; PNAS 118:e2111267118, 2021; PNAS 119:e2210633119, 2022; PNAS 120:e2213622120, 2023; Nature Commun 14:4826, 2023; Development 151:dev.202239, 2024).

Postdoctoral scholars at the University of Kansas Medical Center are individuals who have received their terminal degree and who have opted to pursue further training in a postdoctoral appointment. Postdoctoral scholarship is a time-limited appointment, the primary purpose of which is to provide research and/or scholarly training for an academic or research career. A postdoctoral scholar at KUMC is expected to:

Participate in a full-time regimen of advanced training and research, train under the supervision of a faculty research mentor who will provide the opportunity for collaborative and independent research, as well promote publication of findings and preparation of research grants as determined by a mutual agreement between the postdoctoral scholar and the mentor, participate in relevant academic activities related to the preparation for a career in research or academia, participate in the University’s Individual Development Plan policy for postdoctoral scholars, have a PhD or equivalent terminal degree (such as MD, DVM, PsyD, PharmD, etc.), and candidates should have strong communication skills to write and communicate with a scientific audience.

Candidates must be able to independently plan, multi-task and complete projects. Ideally, the fellow will be expected to design and execute experiments, analyze data, write and prepare independent grant applications and manuscripts for scientific publications, and supervise graduate students.

Job Description:

Job Duties Outlined:

  • Research the regulation of trophoblast cell development using in vitro and in vivo models.

  • Participate in the generation and characterization of mutant rodent models for investigation of trophoblast cell development.

  • Prepare written and oral reports on research progress and participate in the preparation of manuscripts for publication.

  • Actively apply for Postdoctoral Fellowship funding from various sponsors, including but not limited to The Lalor Foundation, K-INBRE (internal KUMC) and NIH F32.

  • Assist in training other postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and research assistants in techniques used for the investigation of trophoblast-uterine interactions

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director  

Required Qualifications

Education: Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree in biology, reproductive sciences or a related field.

Work Experience:

  • Experience in biochemical and molecular biology research approaches

  • Experience working with mutant rodent models.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
