At the forefront of medical discovery as it relates to understanding the causes of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and dementia, Pennington Biomedical Research Center is a campus of Louisiana State University and conducts basic, clinical and population research. The Center includes Basic Science, Clinical Research, and Population and Public Health, enabling both focused research and translational science. Research at Pennington Biomedical is supported broadly by multiple NIH Research Centers, and includes approximately 65 faculty and 20 postdoctoral fellows who comprise a network of 44 laboratories and 13 highly specialized core service facilities. Pennington Biomedical is located within state-of-the-art research facilities on a 222-acre campus in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Job Description:

Pennington Biomedical Research Center, a world-renowned academic research institute of Louisiana State University, is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher in Physical Activity and Ethnic Minority Health.

The Postdoctoral Researcher will study the effects of lifestyle interventions on health outcomes among underserved populations, primarily African Americans. A large proportion of the research activities will involve working with older adults, and there are also
opportunities engage in work with specific subpopulations including men and rural populations. The fellowship will provide training and hands-on research experiences in behavior change strategies, neuroimaging, health disparities, aging, intersectionality of race and gender, and community-engaged research.

The fellow will assist with study design and implementation, and lead his or her own data analyses and publication of study findings. In addition, the fellow will have the opportunity to work on secondary data from additional interventional and observational studies related to lifestyle, and cardiometabolic and aging outcomes among African American cohorts. The fellow will also be provided with career development training including scientific writing and lab management. The goal of the fellowship is for the fellow to develop his or her own unique research agenda related to health disparities, aging, neuroscience, or other related areas. Therefore, the fellow is expected to apply for grant funding during the fellowship period. This work will occur in a highly collaborative and diverse research environment with opportunities to contribute to a wide variety of publications, presentations, and grant proposals.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD
  • Three years of experience conducting behavioral lifestyle interventions, community-based research, and/or conducting clinical research in ethnic minority groups or other under-represented populations.
