BASIC FUNCTION:

The purpose of this position is to provide pedagogical, administrative, and research training for a Research Fellow in the College of Arts and Sciences (COAS) through including but not limited to the development of research skills in genomics & bioinformatics, presentation, teaching, and writing.

SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:

Involves no responsibility or authority for the direction of others.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

Internal contacts include the principal investigator, assistant/associate deans, directors, department heads/chairs, faculty, staff and students at the College and school levels, and deans, directors and executive level officers at University level.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Manage a computational biology research portfolio in the Department of Biology; lead projects designed by the principal investigator; Develop genomics and bioinformatics projects; Mentor graduate and undergraduate students.

Participates in academic, didactic, and professional training provided through seminars, workshops and direct meetings with grant faculty.

Coordinates and assure development of bioinformatics tools and publish research papers on high profile journals.

Conducts data collection, statistical analysis, and data interpretation for grant applications.

Participates in grant writing, development of manuscripts and reports.

Performs other related duties and responsibilities as may be assigned.

Demonstrated computing experience and knowledge, including software packages development.

Competence in both oral and written English and ability to articulate concisely and in a professional manner.

Ability to work effectively in team-oriented interdisciplinary genomic research.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Postdoctoral Position in Computational Genomics and Precision Medicine

The Department of Biology and the Center for Applied Data Science and Analytics at Howard University, Washington, DC, invite applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position. We seek an innovative and motivated candidate with a strong background in bioinformatics, computer science, electrical engineering and computer science (EECS), statistics, mathematics, or biology.

Position Overview

The successful candidate will contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of machine learning, deep learning, and genomics. The primary focus of the lab is to develop advanced computational models to:

  • Investigate insights into gene regulation.
  • Explore the genotype-phenotype relationship in the context of precision medicine.

The position also offers the flexibility to pursue independent, candidate-driven projects aligned with the lab’s broader mission. In addition, this position provides an excellent opportunity for training, where candidates can learn how to leverage their quantitative skills to discover biological and medicinal insights, driving innovative research in genomics and functional genomics.

Required Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computer science, EECS, statistics, mathematics, biology, or a related field.
  • Experience with machine learning and deep learning techniques.
  • A strong foundation in genomics or functional genomics.
  • Proficiency in programming languages and tools commonly used in computational biology (e.g., Python, R, TensorFlow, PyTorch).
  • A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and communicate scientific findings effectively.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with precision medicine research.
  • Knowledge of multi-omics data analysis.
  • Strong publication record in relevant fields.
