CITRE, based in Seville, Spain, is Bristol Myers Squibb’s research institute in Europe, and our link to the European research community. Informatics & Predictive Sciences at CITRE performs innovative computational research to inform decisions across all stages of drug development. Areas of research include computational and network biology, machine/deep learning, cheminformatics, predictive modeling, patient stratification, and method development for analysis and interpretation of biological data.

Position

There is tremendous potential to accelerate the development of life-saving drugs through more efficient use of existing biomedical knowledge and real-world data. We seek an innovative scientist specialized in Natural Language Processing (NLP), knowledge discovery and data mining to join us.  You will focus on developing methodologies to extract useful biomedical associations, patterns, rules from huge amount of heterogeneous data, including but not limited to biomedical knowledge graphs, various databases, and scientific literature. You will contribute to our growing efforts to develop/apply cutting-edge AI/ML, NLP, Large Language Models (LLMs) to uncover hidden but critical information from heterogeneous data stored in unstructured, semi-structured, and structured formats.


Working alongside a multidisciplinary team of computer scientists, data scientists and biological domain experts, you will pursue key research objectives, including the design and development of data-driven and machine learning approaches to support strategic decision making as well as drug discovery research. The role offers the opportunity to directly impact the origination and delivery of transformational and life-changing therapies in key diseases of unmet medical need. 


The position is based in Seville, Spain, and although flexible working arrangements are in place (50% work in-office), fully remote working options are not offered currently.
 

Responsibilities

  • Develop and apply cutting-edge NLP/text mining and AI/ML methods to conduct research and deep analysis over large and heterogeneous datasets, to enhance our drug discovery efforts and R&D productivity.
  • Pioneer data-driven, machine/data mining and predictive approaches to inform strategic decisions, e.g., identifying and prioritizing collaboration and partnership opportunities.
  • Devise innovative ways to present, visualize and interact with complex multidimensional data.
  • Communicate with project stakeholders and have a strong ability to explain complex technical problems using understandable language.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. with AI/ML/NLP/LLMs focus on Computer Science, Data Science, Biomedical Informatics, or a related field with a firm grasp of quantitative methods.
  • Experience or interest in applying contemporary NLP and machine learning methods in the biomedical domain.
  • Publication record in relevant conferences or journals.
  • Expertise in scientific programming languages (e.g., Python), libraries (e.g., PyTorch, Tensorflow).
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, adaptability across disciplines, and collaborative spirit.
  • Verbal and written English language fluency are a prerequisite.

Nice to have

  • 2+ years of industry or postdoc working experience in conducting machine learning and data science research (ideally in a biomedical setting).
  • Experience with NLP/text mining, preferably with Large Language Models (LLMs).
  • Familiarity with knowledge graphs, ontologies, and graph machine learning.
  • Experience with web-based application development and data visualization (e.g., D3.js, R Shiny).
  • Previous experience using version control and high-performance & cloud computing environment.
