  • Appointment type: Full-time, fixed-term (2 years), including a 6-month probation.

  • Location: Macquarie University (Wallumattagal Campus, North Ryde)

About the Role

We’re seeking an enthusiastic researcher to contribute to an established research program which is dedicated to the advancement of AI-based diagnostics in neuro-oncology. The goal of the program is to pioneer cutting-edge AI models for the analysis of biomedical images (mainly, digital neuropathology and neuroimaging) and bridge the gap between AI innovation and practical clinical applications in the realm of brain tumour diagnosis. The research will be conducted as part of a multidisciplinary project funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). The candidate will be working with a team of highly experienced and internationally recognised researchers at the Centre for Health Informatics, within the Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI), and Computational NeuroSurgery (CNS) Lab at Macquarie University. The candidate will report directly to Chief Investigator (CI) Dr Sidong Liu and will engage in collaborative efforts alongside the other CIs, including Professor Antonio Di Ieva, A/Prof Yang Song (UNSW), Professor Benoit Liquet-Weiland and Professor John Magnussen.

About You

You will bring your strong expertise in machine learning / deep learning, medical image computing to our multidisciplinary team, and contribute to the research activities related to the project. Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop advanced algorithms for the analysis of brain tumour images with a primarily focus on MRI and digital pathology images.

  • Innovate, implement, and evaluate AI models tailored to support clinical tasks such as brain tumour grading, molecular sub-typing, recurrence prediction, etc.

  • Collect data, monitor data integrity, and manage the datasets, ensuring compliance with the University’s Research Data Management Framework.

  • Maintain the software repository by documenting the technical implementation of the algorithms / models, and proactively identifying and resolving issues that may arise during development and deployment phases.

  • Support the CIs with research in their research efforts by contributing to data analyses, preparation of ethics and grant applications, and writing of manuscripts for publication.

We are looking both for academic rigour and outputs, as well as practical analytical skills, proven problem-solving experience, and ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders. You will be a good communicator, passionate about your research, and enjoy working in a dynamic team. You will have the opportunity to participate in conferences / workshops and contribute to the supervision of HDR students.

About Us

Macquarie is the university of pioneering minds. Globally recognised as one of Australia’s leading research universities, Macquarie is a place where extraordinary new possibilities come to light. We’ve helped people to hear, introduced wireless internet technology to the world, and broken through traditional boundaries by appointing Australia's first female vice-chancellor.

Macquarie University's Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences builds on our aspiration to have the nation's first fully integrated Academic Health Sciences Centre under a university's leadership. It brings together the excellent work of medical and allied-health clinicians and researchers across the University and around the country, with unparalleled access to world-leading clinical resources and research facilities found only on our campus. Our Faculty hosts the Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI), an internationally acclaimed powerhouse researching health systems, digital health and patient safety.

The Centre for Health Informatics (CHI) was Australia’s first digital health research centre and its researchers explore applications of novel digital technologies in healthcare. We have a specific focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its implications for transforming models of care, driving system-wide change and delivering more personalised healthcare. The Centre leads a number of large-scale NHMRC projects in digital health and in 2018 established the Australian Alliance for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare. CHI is a research partner to major healthcare providers, research institutions and governments, and has national and international industry partnerships. The Centre generates high-impact research and works with many large Australian and international Electronic Health Record datasets and its staff have expertise in the development and implementation of state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) methods.
