Job Summary:
The position involves growing the marine cyanophyte Prochlorococcus in a continuous culture system over a range of temperatures from suboptimal to supraoptimal, irradiances (suboptimal and optimal), carbon dioxide partial pressures (500 and 1000 ppm), and under nutrient-replete and ammonium-limited conditions. The position will require measuring growth rates, dark respiration rates, and photosynthetic rates normalized to chlorophyll. The job requires use of sterile techniques for preparing growth media and operating the continuous culture system. The purpose of this work is to gain an informed understanding of how this very abundant marine organism is likely to respond to climate change.
Job Responsibilities:
-Collect samples from the growth chamber at 12-hour intervals once steady state has been established. Samples must be collected for particulate carbon, particulate nitrogen, and chlorophyll.
-Measure concentrations of chlorophyll on spectrophotometer.
-Learn to run and maintain elemental analyzer used for measurement of carbon and nitrogen retained on glass fiber filters.
-Prepare sterile media for the growth of marine phytoplankton.
-Maintain daily record of conditions in growth chamber, including measurements of optical density on a spectrophotometer.
-Assemble and operate a continuous culture system for growing marine phytoplankton. Other duties as assigned.
