THE ROLE
An exciting opportunity for a researcher exists in the School of Natural Sciences at Macquarie University. We are seeking a qualified Postdoctoral Research Fellow with Molecular Microbiology and Synthetic Biology experience to join a team with an international reputation for producing high quality research outcomes in these areas. This role will also participate in the wider ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology multi-disciplinary research with teams from the Centre’s domestic and international university collaborators, partner organisations, and research facilities.
As a Postdoctoral Fellow, you will:
· Use molecular microbiology tools to characterise plant-associated microorganisms and microbiomes
· Develop synthetic microbial communities towards improved plant performance
· Perform experiments and bioinformatic analyses in accordance with the needs of the project
· Write manuscripts for publication
· Supervise undergraduate and graduate students working on this project
As a member of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology, the successful candidate will develop and maintain close working relationships with the Synthetic Biology team, including other postdoctoral fellows, research students as well as CoESB Investigators in research groups and nodes in other universities to progress the Centre's research, translation, and outreach objectives.

Selection Criteria
To be considered for this position, applicants must address the selection criteria below, and attach your CV (including a list of two referees), a statement of research interests and achievements.
Essential
PhD or equivalent experience in molecular biology, microbiology, synthetic biology or a related discipline
Demonstrated skills in metagenomics, bioinformatics, and statistical analyses
Ability for analytical thinking and independent problem solving
Experience in manuscript writing and other academic outputs
A track record working both as an independent researcher and in a team-based environment
Excellent communication skills, with an ability to relate to and engage with other staff, external stakeholders and students
Desirable
Experience working with plant-associated microorganisms and conducting glasshouse experiments
Experience with techniques for detecting and characterising mobile genetic elements and HGT events
A strong research track record evidenced by first-authored publications in high quality journals
Experience supervising or providing mentorship to higher degree research students
Salary package: Level A Step 6 (PhD) from $102,501 to $109,852 p.a., plus 17% employer’s superannuation and annual leave loading.
Appointment Type: Full-time, fixed term for 2 years, with a possibility of further extension subject to funding
