Job posting number: #73528 (Ref:R37988)

This Job Posting is Expired.

Job Description

We are looking for highly motivated Doctoral Researchers (PhD students) and Postdoctoral Researchers to work on experiments in two projects: 1) Hybrid magnonics for energy efficient and neuromorphic computing and 2) Voltage-reconfigurable spin-wave computing. Both projects are funded by the Academy of Finland (2023 – 2027).

Project 1

In this project, we will investigate hybrid magnonic elements consisting of low-loss yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films and ferromagnetic nanostructures such as resonators, waveguides, (de)multiplexers, directional couplers, and concave/convex spin-wave lenses. The most suitable hybrid structures will be integrated into spin-wave computing circuits. We aim at the demonstration of energy-efficient logic gates based on interferometry and the realization of magnonic neural networks using nonlinear scattering arrays for the classification, autoencoding, and recognition of multimodal environmental information.

Project 2

In this project, we will develop universal spin-wave logic gates

that are programmed on demand by small voltages. The logic gates will be implemented on different material platforms to test and tailor their operation frequency, energy-efficiency, and adaptability. As controlling elements, we will use ionic battery gates to reprogram the power coupling between magnonic waveguides and ionic supercapacitor gates to shift the spin-wave phase. In combination, these voltage-tunable building blocks will enable adaptive mapping of the input and output signals for neuromorphic processing.

Both projects are conducted in the Nanomagnetism and Spintronics group (Prof. Sebastiaan van Dijken) at the Department of Applied Physics of Aalto University. Two researcher positions are available in each project. Our laboratory is equipped with advanced instrumentation for film growth and advanced magnetic, electronic, and magneto-optical characterization. For the advertised positions, a magnetron sputtering system, a pulsed laser deposition system for YIG film growth, a VNA-FMR setup, a broadband spin wave spectrometer, a time-resolved magneto-optic Kerr effect microscope for spin-wave imaging, and various techniques for magnetic and structural characterization are particularly relevant. You will also have full access to the OtaNano research infrastructure consisting of a state-of-the-art cleanroom for nanofabrication and a center for nanomicroscopy.

Aalto University is located on the Otaniemi campus in Espoo, within the greater Helsinki area, with good connections along the recently opened metro line. Our community consists of 100 nationalities, 13000 students, 400 professors and 4500 other faculty and staff. Diversity is part of who we are, and we warmly encourage qualified candidates from all backgrounds to apply.

Your experience and ambitions

We are looking for bright and motivated Doctoral Researchers (PhD students) and Postdoctoral Researchers with an excellent record in magnonics, magnetism, or spintronics. Good command of English (both verbal and written) and demonstrated ability to disseminate scientific results are mandatory requirements for the position. Finnish language is not required. Applicants must be motivated to conduct research at the highest international level with the aim at publishing high-impact articles. To be eligible, Doctoral Researchers must hold a MSc degree and Postdoctoral Researchers must hold a PhD degree in physics or another suitable field.

What we offer

The positions of the Doctoral Researchers are initially filled for 2 years and continued for another 2 years after a successful midterm review. The starting salary for Doctoral Researchers is 2690 € per month (gross), and it increases as the Doctoral Researcher progresses in the research and studies.

The postdoctoral researcher salary ranges from 3900 € to 4300 € per month (gross), depending on previous experience. Postdoctoral researcher contracts will initially be made for 2 years.

Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities. All contracts include occupational healthcare. The annual workload of research and teaching staff at Aalto University is currently 1612 hours.

Our vast array of professional development opportunities means you will grow and learn, having the chance to participate actively in staff trainings and development projects based on your interests and needs. There is great freedom in your role, and we have a flexible modern working culture. We value work-life balance and well-being in all aspects of life.
