JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Penn State Department of Chemical Engineering is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Scholar to work on systems analysis of ice cream waste valorization approaches that convert the waste products to value-added products. The successful candidate will conduct research in laboratories at Department of Chemical Engineering, Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering, and Department of Food Science at Penn State's University Park campus.
Responsibilities:
Investigate the ice cream waste components to develop innovative and sustainable processes to recover and utilize the waste in food and non-food applications.
Design and model multiple biosystems that utilize wasted products from ice cream, including co-digestion systems, and evaluate the profitability of innovative methods to recover proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and minerals.
Perform bioprocess simulation, life cycle assessment (LCA), and techno-economic analysis (TEA) to assess the industrial feasibility and guide process decisions.
Work in a multidisciplinary team and perform industrial collaborations.
Required Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in chemical engineering, food science, biological engineering, environmental engineering, systems engineering, or a related field by the start date.
Ability to work in a collaborative and multidisciplinary research environment.
Excellent communication skills to deliver research verbally and in writing.
Evidence of scientific impact of their Ph.D. (e.g. published papers).
Expertise in life cycle assessment, techno-economic analysis, biosystems, Aspen Plus® / SuperPro Designer®, or programming in Python is highly desired.

This is a term appointment, funded for one year from date of hire, with a possibility of renewal. Renewal is dependent on availability of funds, the successful candidate's performance/progress, and their career goals (mentoring plans will be tailored to meet the individual's goals). The successful candidate's anticipated start date is March 1, 2024. Review of applicants will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
