Base Salary Level B $118K p.a. - $140K p.a. + 17% superannuation
About the opportunity
The School of Mathematics and Statistics is one of the largest mathematical sciences schools in Australia, and the University of Sydney is the only Australian university to have received the highest rating of 5 out of 5 for research in the mathematical sciences in every Australian Research Council Excellence in Research for Australia assessment to date. The University also hosts the Sydney Mathematical Research Institute (SMRI), which attracts leading mathematical scientists from all over the world to do research with Australian collaborators.
We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Pure Mathematics and Computation. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor John Voight in the School of Mathematics and Statistics and Professor Geordie Williamson at SMRI. The successful applicant will undertake research in algorithm design and development, with a particular emphasis on the Magma computational algebra system. The candidate will also support the research and outreach activities of the School and SMRI in these areas.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
demonstrate research excellence in mathematics and computation
develop, implement and document novel algorithms in pure mathematics
develop research collaborations
assist with grant writing and publishing original work
supervise students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
contribute to successful applications for competitive research grants and/ or funding to deliver research impact
develop your profile in the areas of mathematics and computation through conferences and seminars
About you

a PhD in mathematics in an area aligned with the research interests of Professors Voight or Williamson
experience in software and algorithm development
the ability to supervise students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
proven research excellence in mathematics
demonstrated evidence of independent research ability and potential
experience in research documentation, preparation of research papers and presentation of seminars
demonstrated excellence in written and oral communications skills.
