Job Description Summary:

The employee will participate in federally and privately funded studies in Darren Wallace’s laboratory in the Jared Grantham Kidney Institute. Dr. Wallace directs a research program that investigates the mechanisms involved in renal cystic disease in polycystic kidney disease (PKD), a common genetic disorder. A current focus is on understanding the molecular basis of cyst formation and growth, and changes in the microenvironment that lead to fibrosis and renal failure. This individual will investigate the role of cell surface integrins, G-protein coupled receptors and other signaling pathways involved in the disease using human tissue, primary cells and PKD animal models. The employee will be expected to work with Research Associates and Research Assistants in the laboratory and develop leadership skills.

Required Qualifications

Education: PhD in cell biology, physiology, pharmacology, pathology or related fields.

Preferred Qualifications

Work Experience: Experience with small animal experimentation, tissue culture and in vitro assays, and molecular biology techniques such as DNA and RNA extraction, RT-PCR, immunoblot analysis, and immunofluorescence staining.

  • Research OverviewJOB IS FROM: postdocjobs.oneVIEW: Design and conduct experiments and interpret data under the mentorship of the Principal Investigator (PI).

    • Work independently and collaboratively on research projects.

    • Assist in mouse breeding strategies, genotyping, and small animal experimentation.

    • Perform molecular and cell biology techniques such as DNA and RNA extractions, RT-PCR, immunoblot analysis, immunofluorescence staining and tissue culture.

    • Assist with development of grant proposals, including applicable fellowship award applications and NIH R01 applications.

  • Postdoc Expectations: The Postdoc will be expected to complete research projects under the guidance of the faculty mentor, record and interpret the results of their experiments in an (electronic) laboratory notebook, prepare publication-quality manuscripts (including figures and tables) and publish in peer-reviewed literature.

    • Read literature articles, develop new ideas, and assimilate the information into his/her project design/interpretation.

    • Dissemination of studies: Interact on a regular basis with their PI, faculty mentor and members of the laboratory to discuss experimental design and interpretation of results.

    • Present research aims and findings at department seminars and at local and national scientific meetings. Write and publish their results as first author in abstracts, manuscripts, and posters.

  • Compliance: Attend and maintain compliance on all orientation and training sessions designated by the University and the Department, understand and follow IACUC and biosafety protocols, and attend departmental seminars and regular lab meetings.

  • Perform other duties assigned by PI and faculty mentor.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
